About the Carpenter Ant

Carpenter ants are large ants – from 6 mm for a worker ant, to up to 19 mm for a queen. To build their nests, they excavate wood, damaging the wood with their smooth tunnels running through the wood. Thus damaging the strength of a wooden structure which could be your house’s beams, wooden walls or floorboards.

These ants will first invade wet, mouldy, decaying wood such as tree stumps, but they also excavate their tunnels through dry and undamaged wood. Once they get entry to a wooden structure, they become a threat to the owner because they destroy the strength of the wood that keeps the structure intact.

They get entrance to buildings through cracks around doors and windows or even holes for wires and pipes. They are not limited to the ground either, but will come in along overhead wires or trees, shrubs and plants touching the building. Since carpenter ants like to build their nests in wood-stacks, one should avoid storing firewood close to your home. From the wood-stack they quickly find their way into your home through cracks or little openings around the bottom of the walls.

The main difference between carpenter ants and termites is that while termites eat wood, carpenter ants make their nests in the wood. This means that they have to be exterminated using different methods of treatment.

Unfortunately it takes a while before you will notice the tell tale signs that they are slowly eating away at your investment. Which means that when you notice any sign of possible infestation, rather contact the experts immediately. Let them perform an inspection and, if necessary, get rid of the problem straight away.

Signs of infestation

• You might notice little mounds of something resembling sawdust beneath wooden areas such as skirting and door jams.
• Or hear a noise like something is moving inside wooden walls and hollow doors.
• There are large ants coming out of walls, hidden crevices or ceilings
• You see wings that were shed by swarmer carpenter ants on skirting or window sills, etc.
